- 1 packet 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
- 1 ½ cups warm water
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- ⅓ cup baking soda
- 1 egg for egg wash
- Coarse sea salt for topping
In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms.
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled.
Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Dissolve baking soda in 4 cups of water in a large pot and bring to a simmer.
Divide the dough into 10 equal pieces and roll each into a rope about 24 inches long.
Shape each rope into a pretzel and dip in the baking soda water for 30 seconds.
Place pretzels on the baking sheet, brush with beaten egg, and sprinkle with coarse salt.
Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving.
